Miss World event could come to Wales

The Miss World competition could come to Wales in the near future according to the organisers of Miss Wales.

Vibe – the Cardiff based agency – which promotes the Miss Wales competition is leading a bid to bring one of the biggest world events to Wales for the very first time in its history.

Having liaised with the Miss World Organisation, Paula Abbandonato event organiser of Miss Wales, has confirmed that the Morleys would welcome the Welsh bid.

She said: “In the past London has been the only UK city to host the Miss World competition. For the last two years it has gone to China – and bids have already been received from the US, Australia and China for the 2006 contest.”

“There is still a phenomenal interest in the event. It is broadcast worldwide to more than 180 countries and attracts two billion viewers.”

With an impressive track record of recent events including the Rugby World Cup, European Summit, the FA Cup Final and the Tsunami Relief concert – as well as the Ryder Cup planned for 2010 - there is every reason for the Miss World Organisation to consider Wales as a host country.

Steve Douglas, from the Miss World Organisation, said: “We would welcome a bid from Wales. If successful more than 100 Miss World contestants would spend around five weeks touring the country with a packed itinerary – and the world’s press would follow. Without exception, host countries see a boost in tourism after hosting Miss World.”

Others backing Vibe’s Miss World bid include Paul Sergeant of the Millennium Stadium. He said “Cardiff is one of the best cities in the world so why not bring the contest here? It’s still a hugely popular competition and any event of such international calibre can only be good for Wales. I’d be delighted to support the bid.”

The current sponsor of Miss Wales, Professor Harryono Judodihardjo of Cellite Clinic, is in agreement. He said: “The rise in popularity of the Miss Wales competition over the last couple of years only confirms the interest here in the beauty pageant. We all know Wales is a beautiful country so it makes sense that it should host the world best-loved beauty contest.”
